The importance of good lighting can't be underestimated. To light seems simple but creating a balance between a functional lighting and a nice atmosphere, it isn't simple at all.
The art of quality lighting is to let cooperate the different light sources, natural and artificial in a way the user sees well, the function, and feels well, the atmosphere. To find this balance and create good lighting, you need to pay attention to the following.
Chose a lighting level that suits the function of the space. For a warehouse just keeping goods, 150 lux mostly is enough. Rough work needs 300 lux. In your office, at home or at work you probably will need 500 lux. And if you need to do very fine work, with a great precision, 1000 lux is not an unnecessary luxury.
Align your lighting creating forms and relief, light and shadow.
Avoid dazzling, aligning a spot parallel with the walking direction is not a good idea. Spotlight on a shiny surface can also dazzle.
Light and shadow is what you need, sufficient but not to much. Again, it's the balance in lighting that is important, atmosphere and function.
Use light sources with a good return and an excellent light colour index. A incandescent lamp is a champion in building atmosphere but surely not a winner in terms of energy saving. A discharge lamp saves you a lot of energy but mostly has a poor light colour index. About the new led lamps, it's a bit wait and see. The nature of led light is icy white. By applying a coloured filter this can be corrected but diminish the return.
When you use little light, use warm light. A soft and cool light will surely not contribute to a nice atmosphere.
Natural light is never constant. It can be an advantage to equip your lighting with dimmers. As such you will always be able to produce the right light level. Little and soft light brings peace. Also at evening hours dimming your lighting is a good idea.
